My Genealogy study has brought me a great deal of
pleasure
over the past few years and
unlocked historical treasures as well as connecting me to family that
I did not know.
The surnames that appear in my studies
include:
---, Elizabeth, (4/4 Karuk) CA.
ARMSALE (unknown); or Olmsdale, native of Prussia
DAVIS, John, Gold Rush miner (Wales) and Emma, 4/4Karuk Woman, CA.
INCE, John, (Missouri and CA.) farmer; and wife, Emily Tanner; 1/2 Karuk woman, CA;
NIX, Thomas Jefferson, Illinois; and wife Libby (Harripop) 4/4Yurok, CA.
ROBERTS, Thomas, N.Y., CA; and wife, Amanda (Tanner) CA ¼ Karuk;
SEDROS, John, Portugal, rancher; and wife, Alice (Swearingen) CA;
SWEARINGEN, Benoni, miner/rancher, Illinois/CA; and wife Elizabeth Gilbert (Ball) Indiana/CA;
TANNER, Ezra Sherman, N.Y., WI. , OR. CA. and wife Emily (Armsdale), (CA).
WILSON, (unknown) miner, (Del Norte Co.)
The study includes the Karuk history of my Great-grandmother,
Elizabeth,
a name given to her
by the first white miners and farmers coming to the river who took
tribal women as mates on the
Klamath River. They were given only a first name by the white men they
lived with, but all had
names within the tribe.
The above surnames all appear in the early county records of
Klamath, Del Norte, and
Siskiyou, Countys of California whose boundaries changed between 1850
and 1880; and
Josephine County of Southern Oregon.
